Gallery Wall Sets of 3: The Easiest Way to Transform a Large Wall

A single print is a statement. A set of three is a transformation. If you have a large wall that feels empty, a gallery wall set of 3 is the most effective — and most forgiving — solution in interior design. It fills space beautifully, creates visual rhythm, and feels intentional in a way that a random collection of prints never quite achieves.

Why Sets of 3 Work So Well

There's a reason designers reach for threes. It's visual psychology: three elements create a natural sense of rhythm and balance without the rigidity of symmetry. The eye moves comfortably across three objects in a way it doesn't with two (which can feel static) or four (which can feel heavy).

In practice, this means a set of three prints will look cohesive and intentional even if you're not a trained interior designer. The hard work of curation has been done — the prints are designed to complement each other in palette, mood, and composition.

"The hard work of curation is already done — sets of 3 are designed to hang together from the start."

How to Hang a Set of 3

The most common and effective arrangement is a horizontal row. Here's how to do it right:

  • Gap between prints: 5–8cm (2–3 inches) is the sweet spot. Too wide and the set loses cohesion; too narrow and it feels cramped.
  • Height: Hang the centre of the arrangement at eye level — roughly 145–150cm from the floor.
  • Above a sofa: The set should span approximately two-thirds of the sofa's width. For a standard 200cm sofa, a set of three 18x24" prints works perfectly.
  • Above a bed: Span the width of the headboard. The prints should feel connected to the furniture below, not floating above it.

For a more dynamic look, try a slightly staggered arrangement — the centre print raised 10–15cm higher than the two flanking prints. This creates movement and works especially well with abstract or landscape sets.

Best Artist Collections for Sets of 3

Our collection spans over a dozen artists. Here are the sets we recommend most often:

  • Henri Matisse — vibrant, saturated colour and bold shapes. Ideal for living rooms with neutral furniture.
  • Vincent van Gogh — swirling textures and rich blues and yellows. Warm and emotional. Stunning in sets.
  • Yayoi Kusama — bold graphic patterns in saturated colour. Perfect for contemporary and maximalist interiors.
  • Flower Market — botanical and romantic. Works beautifully in bedrooms and dining rooms.

Choosing the Right Size

Size is the single most important decision, and most people underestimate how large to go:

  • 3 × 12x16" — total span approx. 110cm. Best for walls up to 150cm wide, above a console table or in a hallway.
  • 3 × 18x24" — total span approx. 160cm. The most versatile size. Perfect above a standard sofa or queen-size bed.
  • 3 × 24x36" — total span approx. 210cm. For large feature walls and open-plan spaces. Genuinely dramatic.

If in doubt, go up a size. Art almost always looks better larger than you expect in a real room.
